Longitudinal landscape water-savings historical dataset

WaterFiles is an offline water savings dataset assembled by Water2Save over the last 25 years from a landscape water savings business in high-tariff California urban water use markets. The Dataset files link property site and landscape-area records, irrigation watering minutes, weather adjustments, and retail utility meter reads.

WaterFiles at a Glance

Regulatory Catalyst

California’s “Making Conservation a California Way of Life” framework requires urban retail suppliers to meet climate-adjusted water-use objectives, with outdoor irrigation as a major focus.

Supply Shock

Federal decisions cut Colorado River allocations to Lower Basin amid record-low snowpack and critically low reservoir levels.

Value Proposition

Multi-decade, weather-adjusted outdoor water savings data, effectively impossible to replicate.

Geographic Coverage

Urban microclimates across service areas of California’s largest retail water suppliers.

Longitudinal Depth

Over two decades spanning wet, dry, and multi-year drought cycles.

Granular Records

Dedicated irrigation meters, property locations, irrigated area, climate zones, weather data, landscape watering adjustments, and retail supplier identifiers.

California Urban Water Utilities Companies

Creation of Commercial Dataset

The commercial level water savings data was not scraped from the internet. Beginning in 2000, Water2Save operated a pay-for-performance outdoor water management service for large-landscaped properties. The business was formed to optimize water use and save money on commercial level properties by remotely adjusting irrigation based on site-specific weather data.

To fulfill performance guarantees, Water2Save developed an operational Data Center which communicated with proprietary wireless electronics installed on existing irrigation controllers. Localized weather adjustments were transmitted daily to controllers. Data Center operators logged water utility bill usage to compare with pre-service baselines and report savings.
